Next time your non-tech savvy aunt/dad/neighbor asks you “what is this Android thing?” send them this.

This nice infographics shows the period from October 2008 (when the first Android smartphone, HTC Dream a.k.a. G1 a.k.a. ADP1, was released) until January 2011. Notice how the scale counting the number of Android device activations, scales up to catch up with the growth.

They’ll like to know what an “device activation” is. It’s the moment which comes after buying the device and starting it for the first time. It’s the moment when the love for Android (and device choice freedom) is (re)born.

Thanks to Fee Beyer for the link.

After the Droid Does (and iDon’t) campaign prior to releasing the Droid phone (a.k.a. Milestone in Europe), here’s another cheeky campaign coming from Motorola.

Even though more than a year has passed, and this time it’s about tables and not smartphones, one of the goals is still the same - throwing punches at Apple.

Judging by a numer of views (over 300k in a day) they figured out how to build up the hype prior to the release during the next CES taking place January 6-9, 2011 in Las Vegas.

Android OS most popular among US smartphone buyers

According to Nielsen, Android is the most popular OS among smartphone buyers since the beginning of 2010. Caveat: this applies to the US.

In their words: “among people who bought a smartphone in the past six months, while Blackberry RIM and Apple iOS are in a statistical dead heat for second place among recent acquirers.”

The stats for the overall smartphone OS usage you can find below. The Android OS keeps on going up.

Another entertaining commercial, where some models Android phones are walking down the catwalk. The phones arousing the male crowd are: HTC Desire, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, and Samsung Galaxy S.

If you liked this ad, you’ll like the previous one as well.

TAT augmented ID is an UI concept developed by TAT (The Astonishing Tribe).

TAT is a Swedish company which has previously developed UI for Android. If you look at that analog clock widget with Malmö written on it, it’s because this is where these guys are from.

On the other hand, Polar Rose is a face recognition technology company (BTW, also from Malmö) which exists for more than two years and is constantly being developed. There’s another face recognition company out the (face.com) which has hooked up with its name sibling (Facebook).

All in all, what you see here is quite possible and probably feasible.

Do you know anyone working on something similar?

Hilarious Nexus One unboxing video. Ninja’s do it with style flair.

Nice little viral video campaign from Google.

Starting with the most valuable ad spot on the internet to efforts like this, they’re using their immensely developed brand and platform to deliver the same message - you want this superphone smartphone!
